The federal government has announced new measures to encourage the shift from fuel-powered vehicles to electric ones.
In a press conference, Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari revealed plans to make electric vehicles more affordable for the public. The government will reduce electricity tariffs for charging stations by 45%, which will help boost the growth of electric vehicles. As a result, electric motorcycles could see savings of up to 77%, according to Leghari.
The minister also mentioned that electric vehicle permits will now be issued online within 15 days, removing the need for people to meet with officials in person. Additionally, electricity tariffs will be reduced from Rs71 to Rs39 per unit, which will benefit electric vehicle owners.
Leghari pointed out that Pakistan spends $6 billion annually on fuel imports for motorcycles and three-wheelers, and this shift to electric vehicles could help reduce that financial burden while promoting environmental sustainability.
In a separate development, the government plans to simplify business operations in industrial estates by introducing a “one-window operation” for all electricity-related services, such as billing and new connections. This is seen as a step toward improving governance and helping the business community.
The minister also mentioned that the government is working to lower electricity prices for the public, with plans to bring Pakistan’s electricity rates in line with the lowest in the region in the near future.
