Trump Warns Putin to End War in Ukraine or Face More Sanctions

Donald Trump has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will impose high tariffs and additional sanctions if he does not end the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump made these comments on his social media platform, Truth Social, urging Putin to settle the conflict or face further economic pressure from the United States.

In his post, Trump emphasized that pushing for a resolution would be a “very big favor” to Russia and President Putin. Trump has previously stated that he could negotiate a settlement to the war, which started with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, in just one day.

Though Russia has not yet responded to Trump’s remarks, some senior Russian officials have indicated that there may be a narrow opportunity for the Kremlin to engage with a new U.S. administration. Putin has repeatedly said he is open to negotiations, but only if Ukraine accepts the reality of Russian territorial gains, which currently cover about 20% of Ukrainian land. He also insists that Ukraine must not join NATO.

Ukraine has resisted giving up any of its territory, though President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that some occupied areas may need to be temporarily conceded.

On Tuesday, Trump said he would soon be talking to Putin and hinted that if the Russian president did not come to the negotiation table, he would apply more sanctions. He reiterated this stance on Wednesday, saying: “Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.”

Trump went on to state that if no deal was made soon, he would have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on any Russian goods sold to the U.S. and other countries.

Trump concluded by stating that the war never would have happened under his presidency, and urged Putin to make a deal. He suggested that there were two ways to end the conflict – the easy way, which involved a settlement, or the hard way, with further sanctions and economic penalties.

As the war continues, Trump’s warning serves as a reminder of his tough stance on Russia and his belief that a peaceful resolution is still possible.
