Karachi: A tragic incident has occurred off the coast of Libya, where a vessel carrying around 65 passengers capsized near the Marsa Dela port, northwest of Zawiya city. Several Pakistani migrants are feared to be among the victims.
Pakistan Embassy Investigates Casualties
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Pakistan Embassy in Tripoli has dispatched a team to the local hospital to assist in the identification of the deceased. The embassy is also working to gather further details regarding the Pakistani nationals affected by the accident.
In a statement, the Ministry’s Crisis Management Unit confirmed that it has been activated to monitor the situation closely.
Death Toll and Rescue Operations
While no official statement has confirmed the death toll or the identities of the victims, Libyan media reports indicate that at least 10 people have lost their lives.
According to the Libyan Observer, a team from the Libyan Red Crescent recovered 10 bodies after receiving reports from the Zawiya Security Directorate and the Coast Guard.
Discovery of Mass Graves in Libya Raises Concerns
In a separate incident, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed shock and concern over the discovery of two mass graves in Libya, containing the bodies of dozens of migrants, some showing signs of gunshot wounds.
Key Findings by IOM
- At least 30 bodies were found in a mass grave in Kufra, where migrants were allegedly detained and tortured.
- As many as 70 others may have also been buried at the site.
- 19 bodies were discovered in Jakharrah, approximately 400 kilometers south of Benghazi.
The nationalities and exact circumstances of the victims remain unknown. The graves were reportedly found following a police raid, during which hundreds of migrants were rescued from traffickers.
Traffickers Arrested Amidst Shocking Revelations
Photos released by Libyan authorities on social media show emaciated migrants with visible scars on their faces, limbs, and backs. Three suspected traffickers, including one Libyan and two foreigners, have been arrested in connection with the case.
